How many people do you see in the gyms working out their abs day in and day out? Why is this? It is because a lot of people think they can make their abs visible by performing as much ab exercising as possible. Something is wrong with this picture however.

Firstly, why can we not see our abs? That’s right, because they are covered by a thick layer of tummy fats. And what is fat? That’s right, fat is stored by our body when we consume too much food and is a form of energy. So in order to lose this layer of fat and reveal our abs we must use this energy buried under our skin by consuming less energy than we use.

Sounds simple enough so far right! Okay, so why would people do ab exercising all day long when it will firstly burn out the muscles, and secondly does not utilize many calories/energy in the first place.

What we need in order to reveal or abs is not ab exercising, but cardiovascular exercise. This burns a far larger amount of energy to help us get our abs more visible.

Try cardio exercises which use the most muscle in order to burn more calories. Rowing in my opinion is the best and I have to this day, never seen a fat rower.

Our abs and core in general are stimulated by pretty much every exercise we could do, so there is not need to train abs directly too often. Maybe once a week at the most. By performing big compound movements (movements that use multiple joints. Leg extension- isolation, Squats- compound), we will utilize our abs enough anyway, while burning far more calories.If you want to get the best results, then limit your ab exercising and ensure you perform compound movements. This is basic advice, but it really does work.

The types of ab exercises you use and how you perform them depends upon your fitness goals. A professional athlete will have different goals than someone just trying to take off 10 pounds of baby weight, so they will have different requirements for their exercises (abs and otherwise). One shoe does not fit all in this case.

In general, it is best to work your abs in a very slow, deliberate manner so you can feel the isolation of the muscles. This will strengthen them so they function better in general.

Unless you’re performing specific core movements within a circuit style format or using a program designed specially with core exercises for sport specific reasons, Ab exercises should be performed at the end of your workout or by themselves at a time you are not doing other workouts. This will keep the ab muscles strong to work at stabilizing and supporting the body during the other movements. You can then fatigue the abs by doing your ab specific movements at the very end.

You don’t need to perform ab workouts every day of the week. This is overkill! As long as your ab exercises are challenging enough, you can do them 2 or 3 times a week and get great results.

There are three different muscle groups in the abdominal section of the body and your workouts should target all of them. Some exercises should focus on the upper abs while others focus on the lower abs or obliques. Learn what muscles different ab exercises tackle and mix them up so you target all the muscles in each challenging ab workout.

For general health and fitness you should train your muscles in the way they move actively during the course of daily life. For sports training you should train them to be efficient and strong with movements related to your sport.

If you take nothing else away from this, remember that the “more the merrier” thinking does not apply to ab exercises. 100 crunches is not better than 10 if the extra 90 are in poor form. You will see better results if you do your exercises with proper form, even if that means performing a lot less reps.

The ab exercises you perform, the number you perform, and when you do it may be very different from the program others follow. Exercise is an individual journey that you should explore for your own needs, not someone else’s. Remember, this is not a competition or a race.

One of the common complaints I get about exercise is from people who have to travel a lot for their business.  “How am I supposed to get all this ab training in?” they say.  “I’m on the road all off the time!”

The good news is, abs training is super-easy to do on the road.  You don’t really need any equipment.  Although I’m a big fan of the stability ball and the medicine ball to enhance ab workouts, you don’t HAVE to have them in order to get a decent ab workout in. 

What you do need, is the mindset that you won’t let being “on the road” turn into an excuse to not bother doing any training at all.  So being on the road isn’t the threat to your training: letting being on the road turn into an excuse to be lazy is the real threat.

One of the ways you can make sure you stay consistent with your training is to make it simple and easy.  The lower the bar is set, the easier it is to get started.  And, with most people, getting started is the hard part. 

I know that when I’m feeling a little blah and not wanting to get any exercise, if I just get to the gym or get out on the running trail, that’s all it really takes.  Once I start, I’m fine.  I don’t give in to the quitter talk and skip training for that day.  That seems to be how it works for most people.

So, let’s use that to our advantage.  My choice for the best ab exercise for people travelling doesn’t have anything to do with how intense it is or how much it will blast your ab muscles into next week.  It’s got everything to do with getting you doing something, ANYTHING, so that you overcome inertia and follow through with a few other exercises (abs or otherwise).

It’s also dirt simple to perform. It’s called the plank and it’s maybe the most basic and simple ab exercise there is.  Performing it is a snap:  just lie down on the floor face down and do a push up.  Leave yourself in the push up position and hold yourself there.  That’s it.  That’s the exercise.

It may not sound like much, but see how long you can hold it before you start to sag in the middle.  Remember, it’s called the “plank” for a reason.  You have to keep your body as straight as a board.  For beginners, after only a few seconds they may feel it in their ab muscles.  Even for people who are used to abs training, thirty seconds of a plank will usually start putting a decent amount of stress on the abs.

If your arms can’t hold yourself up long enough, bend your arms and rest on your elbows and forearms instead.  The key here is a long, sustained contraction.

The point isn’t just to do a plank.  It’s to get you moving and shake you out of the “I don’t wanna” trap.  The plank is so quick and easy to perform, and once you do it, you’ll realize it’s no big deal and take another step with another exercise.

It isn’t the most intense exercise in the world, but because of its ease, simplicity, and ability to get you unstuck and moving, it’s still the best ab exercise for travelers.
