A medicine ball, in the most basic terms, is simply a round weighted ball. There are several different types of medicine balls available to trainers today and many of them are designed for specific purposes. Some medicine balls are designed to bounce while some are specifically designed not to bounce so you don’t have to chase them. Some balls have tough tread or grip for easy catching while others are smooth. You’ll find medicine balls that float and are soft to the touch and some that are attached to ropes or have handles designed to be used in much the same way as a kettle bell.

So, with all of these choices which do you chose? That answer is simple yet complicated. I know that is an oxymoron, but the more you learn about medicine ball applications the more you’ll understand why. Lets breakdown several different types of balls on the market today and some common uses for each.

Leather Medicine Balls

The traditional leather medicine ball has been around the longest. You’ve seen them in boxing movies or in old issues of strength magazines. They are still around and they still are popular with many trainers. The balls usually range in weight by a few pounds. For example, one medicine ball may have a labeled weight of 12-14 pounds. Although it is not an exact weight it usually works for most general applications.

These balls are generally easy for most people to catch for short distances and are primarily used for abdominal work, although they can be used for a variety of other exercises.

Soft Gel Medicine Balls

These medicine balls are made of a soft vinyl and are filled with a gel. They do not float and do not bounce, which makes them perfect for throwing exercises using a trampoline, or any other surface in which you do not want the ball to bounce back to you. The gel filled medicine balls can also be found in a wider variety of sizes and are perfect for rehab work. These balls also tend to be more economical.

Medicine Balls With Grip

There are a few different types of medicine balls on the market that have additional grip on the outside. These balls are usually made of solid polyurethane and bounce when dropped or thrown against a hard surface. You can use these for just about any exercise and they are therefore the most common type of ball used by major gyms and trainers alike. Another advantage is that most of these balls actually float. This is important for aquatic fitness and sports such as water polo.

Air Filled Medicine Balls

For those trainers who do a lot of long distance traveling or who are just looking for a ball that will float and bounce, there are air filled medicine balls available. Although you can’t ingest a medicine ball, it can definitely help to improve your health. Instead of spending too much money on equipment that you might not use, choose a medicine ball instead. It’s just what the doctor ordered!

When training with medicine balls you improve your core strength, develop full body strength with movements such as throws, squats and lunges, and you can have some fun and release stress at the same time.

Here are five great medicine ball training exercises:

1. Torso Rotations: Sitting on the ground with your feet up, you lean back and rotate the ball side to side, lightly tapping on the floor. This exercise trains your entire core and develops serious lower back strength.

2. Medicine Ball Wall Throws: Stand several feet away from a solid wall in an athletic stance. Tighten your core and press the ball aggressively from your chest onto the wall, catch and repeat as fast as you can. This movement trains the entire upper body and improves power and stamina.

3. Medicine Ball Squat & Press: Hold the medicine ball at your chest, drop into a deep squat and drive through your heels as you press the ball overhead. This exercise trains your lower body, core and upper body. This is a great movement to improve overall strength, athleticism, and burn fat and calories.

4. Overhead Throw: Drop into a half squat and hold the ball between your knees. Extend your hips forcefully and scoop the ball overhead, letting go at the top of the movement. This is a great exercise to develop lower body power, core strength, and triple extension action.

5. V-Up Crunches: Hold a medicine ball with your arms and legs extended lying on your back. Crunch up to meet your limbs in the middle and slowly lower as close to the ground as you can. Contract your abdominal region and exhale at the top of the movement. This is a great core exercise that trains the entire abdominal muscle.

Do you ever wonder the main reason majority of people seem to recommend expensive exercise equipment for a greater and more intense workout? That is because these high performance exercise equipment provide some things that free-weights can’t — stability, strict movement, more effect, and I can go on and on!

Aside from how effective all these gym equipment may be, they come at a price as well! Now what would you do if I told you that there was a “subsitute” that could give you, somewhat, the same effect but would cost you way much less? If you have not been introduced to “proper” medicine ball exercises, along with exercise balls, then you might not know what you have been missing out on.

Everything I Thought Advantageous

Honestly, I have found that medicine ball exercises can be so beneficial when money and time are involved. Below is a list of the conveniences I had from doing medicine ball exercises:

- was able to save a lot of time

- I saved lots of money

- in consideration of their size and ability to deflate, medicine balls and exercise balls could be used just about anywhere! I could even use them in my bed room

- they force you to balance yourself while doing certain work outs, thus giving some more tension causing more muscles to work

- overall, you’re going to get an effective full body workout without any hassles

On the other hand, I can not really say whether doing medicine ball exercises alone will give you results and change your physique into what you’re aiming for because there are so many other important factors to take into consideration when it comes to physical appearance. Although, I can definitely say that these exercises really help speed up the process (if you are doing it right) and they offer the most beneficial methods of resistance training.

I have got to say that medicine balls and exercise balls really pulled through for a person like me who has no real time to spare. So, I really hope me telling you guys all this will benefit you in some way. All the best in your health and fitness goals!

I realize height can play a huge role in whether or not you can get the ball through the hoop. In that case, just use a medicine ball weight suitable for your needs and capabilities….or do the same exercises I do, but instead of putting the ball through the hoop, at the peak of your jump, push the ball up as high as you can. 10 reps total of: 1.
