Step-ups

Step ups are a fantastic exercise and are exceptionally simple to do. Just take a workout bench (or any elevated platform and place it in front of you. Place one foot up on the bench and push up through your heel until you’re at a standing position on the bench. Keep your other leg slightly bent, don’t set it down on the bench. Lower yourself back to the starting position and then repeat. This is a great exercise for developing power and it also helps your stability.

Squat-Presses

Squat presses are a great exercise to do because they combine the lower body benefits of squats with an extra upper body movement on top. Grab a pair of light dumbbells and hold them with a neutral grip at your shoulders. Perform a squat and when you come to the top of the squat, press the dumbbells up like you’re doing a shoulder press. Squats target exactly the muscles you need when skating and doing squats will also help speed up your muscle growth in other areas as well.

Here are 4 vertical leap workouts to start with—and how to make sure you aren’t doing them the WRONG way like most athletes.

EXERCISE #1) “Speed” roping

This is a great way to increase your leaping ability. You perform it just as the name sounds–jumping rope as FAST as humanly possible.

Few workouts on the planet are as good for developing strong “fast twitch” muscles. Try and keep your sets at or below 8 seconds—this will allow you to go all out for each reps.

Since your fast twitch muscles can’t work for more than 8 seconds, exercising for longer than this is pointless.

EXERCISE #2) “Distance jumping”

For this you simply stand behind a line and leap as far as you possible can using both feet. Don’t get a running head start… go from a complete stand still.

For this you stand on a bench with one foot and the other foot on the floor. Then just thrust yourself as high as you possibly can and land in the same position with the same foot on the bench.

EXERCISE #4) Power skipping

For this you simply do the regular skipping motion—but make sure to leap as high and far as possible with each step.

The MOST IMPORTANT tip of all The key in all these leg workouts to jump higher is to stop the sets when you feel your performance declining. “Failure training” is great for improving your endurance and your physique—both good things—but it does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING no good in vertical leap workouts.

Before we go any further, I’m fully aware that the majority of people don’t have easy access to this.  The only reason I mention this is to broach the possibility.  That’s all.

Running or walking in sand is much more difficult than doing the same thing on pavement, or even grass.  You get no stability because of the softness and looseness of the sand.

This exercise is best done in bare feet.  For best results, I suggest performing this exercise in intervals, which means running about as hard as you can for 15 seconds and following that up with a walk for about 50 seconds.

I just wanted to throw this out there for the times you do find yourself near a beach.

Standing long jumps for 5 minutes straight

You may think this exercise is easy, but it will definitely give you a workout.  One great aspect of this exercise is that it only takes 5 minutes.  This is the ideal exercise for those who have a busy and hectic schedule.

Just get yourself in position, which means standing with your feet about a foot apart. Then swing your arms back really fast and jump as far as you can.

That’s not the end of it, though.

I want you do this non-stop for 5 minutes.  If you must, you can take short rests of 10 seconds every now and then.  But keep going without stopping as much as you can.

This is one heck of a cardio workout.  Not only does it work your legs, but it also does a fine job for your butt.
