As an Exercise Scientist and Trainer I have spent much of the last twenty-five years helping people change their body. Smaller, bigger, lighter, leaner, more muscle, more flexibility, speed, power… Athletes, non-athletes, kids, mums, dads…..whatever they were after; that’s what I did my best to deliver.

Early in my career I discovered that whether or not someone achieved their desired goals had very little to do with what was possible, or their genetic potential, and everything to do with their ability to deal with discomfort.

They say that every decision we make in life is in an effort to avoid pain, or gain pleasure.

We choose to eat the cake because we associate cake with pleasure.We choose to avoid the dentist because we associate the dentist with pain.We choose to stay in a bad relationship because we associate more pain with getting out of the relationship than staying in it.

But the reality is :

1) we don’t need the cake2) we do need the dentist and3) we should get out of that destructive relationship.

If only we would give up the cake, look after our teeth and deal with our relationship (i.e. get uncomfortable) we would discover that the short-term pain/discomfort would make way for a whole new world of possibilities and a whole new level of growth, understanding and achievement.

When we talk about changing a body, we’re talking about physiological adaptation… and a body will only adapt when it has a reason to. Most people in most gyms train their body in a manner where there is no need for adaptation… that’s why they typically look the same, year in, year out.Or worse.

Rather than following a program or plan which is progressive in nature (causes them to get uncomfortable on a regular basis) they follow a ‘maintenance program’… because it’s easy and comfortable.And they love ‘comfortable.’

They don’t want to maintain, or intend to maintain… but that’s all they’re doing.They will continue on their cycle of frustration and zero results until they give their body a reason to adapt or until they throw in the towel altogether.

This adaptation/growth principle of exercise science can be applied to life and to our personal growth.

Lesson 2.In general, a person’s ability to succeed will be largely dependant on their ability to adapt (deal with discomfort and change).

Life, relationships, careers, emotions, business markets, technologies, philosophies, environments are all in a constant state of evolution. This is part of the problem; we are creatures of habit and we like familiarity; we like ‘same’.

Lesson 3.We like the benefits of change, but we don’t like the process. But it’s the process, not the results, from where the real benefits come.

Whether it’s physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, professional, social or financial growth your after…. be prepared to get uncomfortable on a regular basis and you will dramatically improve your chances of creating your best life.By the way, the minute you make that uncomfortable decision, or do that uncomfortable thing you’ve been avoiding, the change process becomes instantly easier and your chances of success go through the roof… because you got your head and heart (thinking, attitude, standards, emotions) where they need to be.

And you did what you needed to do.

Just like we work against resistance in the gym and we get stronger and grow muscle, those of us who work against resistance outside of the gym (problems, challenges, opposition, criticism, self doubt, insecurity, fear) get stronger and grow a different kind of muscle; emotional muscle, psychological muscle, self-control muscle, personal development muscle and spiritual muscle… and more.

Now go and get uncomfortable… and grow some muscle.

It is well known that the “buns of steel” that eradicated the state years ago. Through assurance of a firmer behind in little to no time, that butt exercise plan in little time proved itself unfeasible for the mass of American people. Similar products have been introduced but none of them had a lasting impact on the gluteus muscles. If something, our national butt status has shifted from out of shape to embarrassing one. It’s important for both men and women to have firm and toned buttocks and it can be done if one knows the appropriate butt exercises. There are three basic and most important butt exercises to build up your gluteus at a fast pace and give you those strong and hard buns that you have always required.

The first of these three exercises to strengthen the gluteus is named as “lunge.”The exercise is explained as: take a barbell with weights and place it across the shoulders or hold a dumbbell in each hand and lunge with one leg, bending at the knee. The other leg remains at a standstill. Be certain to keep control over your body both as you lunge, and while you return to standing posture.

If you simply drop your weight into the lunge that will cause too much pressure on your knee and would ultimately result in an injury. Start with lighter weight, maintain control, and focus on both your gluteus and hamstrings (the back of your upper legs), and you will see immediately how powerful these butt exercises to make stronger your gluteus really are.

The second exercise is known as “squats.” This is one of the most basic movements in nature; however, many people still do not find it easy. Start this exercise with lower weight as you did it in the first exercise – smooth body weight, if required – and take it slow and simple. Stretch your feet out in order to have a fine balanced position, and lower your butt downward while retaining a straight back with head and eyes facing straight ahead. Squat down until you feel the strain on your upper thighs (quadriceps), and your buttocks, after that push with your thighs until you come back to standing position. This exercise will strengthen the gluteus that will not only make your backside stronger but will add power to muscles and upper thighs as well.

The last exercise is leg curls. You have most likely seen the equipment that majority of the people use for this exercise in local gym or on TV. It consists of a simple bench with a curling accessory (attachment) at one end. You stretch out on your stomach, and pull the weight of the accessory towards buttocks by using only hamstring muscles. This exercise strengthens the gluteus and it can be performed with different weights on your ankles if you don’t have the leg curl machine.

With all of these three exercises, you will have the ideal practice to give your legs and gluteus with more strength, as well as better tone and a more gratifying shape. By using the lunges and squats, you can overall strengthen the thighs and gluteus, and concentrate on the leg curls to build up the hamstrings that join. These three exercises when performed together will make your ideal “buns of steal”.

There are three major kinds of muscle building exercise that you can address in workouts. You can make your muscles stronger, bigger, or have more endurance. We’ll look at how to incorporate each kind of exercise into your program, and tips for how to get the most out of them.

Except for endurance training below, strength and hypertrophy training are best done with weights and sometimes body-weight exercises. Running, hiking, biking, and swimming are all endurance exercises as far as these categories are concerned.

1. Stronger

Many people start exercising to get stronger. There’s a real feeling of accomplishment when you’re able to handle heavier objects than you could in the past.

When you first start out, doing virtually any exercise will make you stronger since you haven’t done any strength training before. You’re a blank slate, and anything makes you stronger than you were before.

However, the best way to build strength is to do low repetitions of a given exercise with heavy weight. When you’re doing weight training or body-weight exercises that strain you to the limit, just 3-5 repetitions at the heaviest weight you can handle is what you should be doing. This way your body is forced to handle heavier and heavier loads.

2. Bigger (Hypertrophy)

Ah, bigger muscles. This is also called training for hypertrophy, a  fancy word meaning simply the enlargement of an organ or tissue (muscle tissue, in this case). This is along the lines of what bodybuilders do.

To focus on making your muscles bigger, do lifting with 8-12 repetitions per set. In this range your muscles will put the most energy into getting bigger. This is great if you want to show off, gain weight for a sporting event, or just get bigger.

3. Tougher – More Endurance

The last kind of muscle building exercise is endurance exercise. Any workout with more than 15 repetitions per set works on endurance, rather than getting stronger or making your muscles bigger.

If you want to run a marathon you’ll do lots of running. Each step is 1 repetition, so you’ll be training for endurance and doing many, many repetitions in a row. If you wanted to get more endurance a different way, you could do leg exercises like squats for high reps.
