Women have a higher percentage of fat ratio to muscle and a different balance of hormones to men.  Men have a greater muscle mass with their dominant hormone being testosterone – for women the dominant hormone is estrogen.  Physical activity should reflect the physical and mental difference in men and women.

Women are sometimes reluctant to indulge in weight training programs, wishing to avoid becoming over muscled.  Weight lifting can actually be most beneficial for women, promoting bone density and helping prevent osteoporosis; an increasing risk for women as they get older.  Approaching menopause, women are at a greater risk of losing bone density and this can be prevented by an exercise program for women that includes regular exercise such as jogging; walking; aerobic dancing and controlled weight lifting.  It is a fact that lifting weights will not result in women becoming over muscled as their body structure makes this impossible.

An exercise that focuses on ‘core’ abdominal muscles is thought to be most beneficial for women: the muscles take a major role during pregnancy and tend to stretch considerably to support childbirth.  Pilates or Yoga are widely believed to be the best form of exercise to prevent loss of spinal flexibility and muscle mass as women age. 

Men might also benefit from strengthening these muscles. Both men and women should find aerobic exercise productive, in 20 minute sessions for best results.  Although men favor strength related exercises, they require frequent rest periods between lifts and therefore do not benefit as greatly as in aerobic activity, where the heart rate and breathing rate is increased. Aerobic exercise is known to have a desirable result, helping to maintain body weight and control body fat; effective protection against heart disease.
