Balance

An effective workout needs balance. Go to any gym and you’ll l see trainees pounding away at chest and arms. One needs to work the whole body to gain muscle at an optimal rate. You need to pound the legs as well as the chest and shoulders. Also, don’t forget to train the back of your body which is often most neglected.

Big Movements

Do you want to gain muscle fast? Train compound movements that stimulate multiple body parts. Compound movements are exercises that require two or more joints to perform. Squat are a great example of a compound movement. They require movement from the hip and knee joints to be performed. Not only do squats train the hamstrings and quads, they also target the glutes, lower back, traps, and abs. That’s a lot of muscle for one movement!

Progression

An effective workout for gain in muscle mass needs progression. You need to beat the previous week’s effort. If you bench 225×5 in week one, you need to bench at least 230×5 or 225×6 in week two. You must challenge the muscle to give it a reason to grow. A workout journal comes in handy to remember your previous numbers.

Frequency

If you’re working hard enough, training each muscle group once per week should be plenty. I know some trainees train more often and have success but in my experience, the once per week rule seems about right.

An example of 4 day a week schedule would go something like this. Monday – Legs, Wednesday – Chest, Friday – Back, Saturday – Shoulders.

You can be flexible with workout design but be sure to follow these tips for an effective workout for gain in muscle mass.

Push-Ups. Push ups can help strengthen the shoulders, chest and triceps. These can be practiced with anyone with a fair level of fitness. Facing down, place your hands wider than shoulder width. Place knees on the floor and create a diagonal with the body, from shoulders to feet. Lower and lift the body alternatively, by bending and straightening the elbows and keeping the torso relaxed and stable. Follow all the above methods for an effective workout.
