You do not need a lot of expensive equipment to get in a good dumbbell workout several times a week. This is one of the best types of exercise because it builds up your lean muscle mass so that you burn more calories not only while you workout, but the rest of the day and into the night as well.
Another perk to working with dumbbells is that you can design your own workouts and do them at whatever time of day best suits your schedule, wearing whatever you want, and wherever you want.
The first step is to find dumbbell exercises that you will use in your self-designed workouts. You can purchase fitness related magazines that print small workouts and key moves on a monthly basis, or you can go online and get the same thing completely free.
One great idea is to go online and look up the fitness magazines you see on the shelves at the store. Many of them have tons of exercises listed by body part right on their website for free. You will see pictures of how to perform each exercise and written directions for each move.
Next, you mix and match the exercises to create your workouts. One idea is to put the exercises on index cards and use them like playing cards. While working out simply grab them as they come up and perform each move.
Another option is to arrange a variety of exercises for 2-3 body parts into workouts together. You can design circuits of 4-5 moves that work different sections of the body. Do each circuit twice without pause and move on to the next circuit. This is more beneficial if you add in cardio moves such as jumping jacks or toe touches to get your heart rate up and burn more calories.
The best thing about a dumbbell workout is that it doesn’t cost a lot of money. Instead of sitting on the couch get up and do some bicep curls. What have you got to lose but those flabby arms?

A few years ago I was desperate to get back in shape and burn some of the fat that a sedentary lifestyle with a full time job had crept onto me. I wanted a workout that I could do in my home gym. Something that I could follow along easily, like a painting by numbers kinda plan.
I researched for fat burning dumbbell workouts in Google and discovered hundreds of them, however, there was one that caught my attention because it was designed with someone like me in mind: A busy guy, with a job and not 2 hours everyday to spend in the gym. This was Turbulence Training. Turbulence Training is a list of fat burning dumbbell workouts that you can do at home or they gym, whichever you prefer. All you need is a bench and a set of dumbbells. It is nice to also have a pull up bar and a stability ball, but nothing else.
These fat burning dumbbell workouts consist of full body, multi muscle and multi joint moves like squats, lunges, chest presses, rows and a lot of bodyweight moves that help you rev up your metabolism and help you burn fat.
These fat burning dumbbell workouts are designed to be done 3 times per week with a day of light activity in between to help you recover and be ready for another intense training session the following day. The workouts are intense but short. I have never been in the gym for more than one hour. Warm up and stretching included which is perfect because after a full day at the office, with family obligations waiting, this is a perfect workout to burn fat in the least amount of time possible.

Dumbbells are an excellent tool to build fitness, burn off unwanted fat and build stronger, bigger muscles. After all, their ability to be used in unison, with one limb or in an alternating manner make them more versatile and effective than many other training tools. But be forewarned… there is not one “BEST” dumbbell workout for all occasions.
As a matter of fact, the “typical” dumbbell workout you find on the Internet, in books or in magazines is an example of one of the least effective ways to use dumbbells for self improvement. By “typical”, I mean a workout that uses lighter dumbbells to target small muscle groups like a bodybuilder.
If you want to get the most benefits from your dumbbell training, you need to stop looking for the best workout (singular), and start looking for a series of full body workouts you can rotate between. Keep reading to see what I mean.
Full Body Dumbbell Workouts For Fitness
One of the main reasons people work out is to “get fit”. And as stated earlier, dumbbells are great for improving fitness you can actually use in the real world because of the ways they can be utilized. You can use them together, one at a time and in an alternating fashion, just like real world movements.
In order to train as many fitness abilities as possible (strength, power, cardiorespiratory endurance, coordination, balance, etc.), you need to use a wide variety of dumbbell workouts. I suggest you use three different workouts (A,B and C) for each of your workout days. Use a wide variety of weights, rep ranges and rest periods to improve overall physical condition and work capacity. Remember, the goal is to improve fitness without sacrificing your fat loss or muscle building goals.
Full Body Dumbbell Workouts For Fat Loss
Dumbbell workouts for fat loss are NOT light dumbbells used for high repetitions. Fat loss workouts using dumbbells should be very challenging, use a wide variety of exercises and target the entire body. Making your dumbbell workout as challenging as possible not only burns a lot of calories during the workout… but also for hours AFTER the workout is completed.
For example, you could use 3 different workouts for each work day (A, B and C) and keep the rest periods low between exercises. Then when you start the second week, reduce the rest periods even further for more fat loss. But remember, the goal is to burn as much fat as possible without sacrificing your fitness and muscle building goals.
Full Body Workouts For Strength And Size
Most people would expect to see some type of split-routine here to build muscle. However, I believe full body workouts are best for building the type of athletically muscular body most people want. To build an athletic body, don’t train like a bodybuilder.
Use the heaviest dumbbells you can and perform compound exercise that use as many big muscle groups as possible. Choose your exercise based on movement patterns, and not the specific muscles they work. This is the way to build a strong, muscular body using dumbbells. And remember, don’t sacrifice your fitness and fat loss goals while building muscle.
Look, there is not a dumbbell workout in existence that can meet everyone’s goals under every circumstance. However, if you rotate between 3 different full body dumbbell workouts (one a month), you can build a fit, lean, athletically muscular body that performs as good as it looks.

Well in my humble opinion and many other fitness professionals, hands down, the most effective workout is the dumbbell workout routine for getting lean, building muscle and getting phenomenally fit in the shortest amount of time. Even more specifically, a circuit training workout is what you need.
Circuit training involves performing many exercises, followed by a rest period, one after the other. It’s very simple and yet extremely effective. If you perform a lot of circuit training, you will get in better shape than you’ve ever been. The following is an example of a circuit training workout.
Dumbbell Workout Program Circuit Example:
Dumbbell CurlsREST – 1 Minute
Dumbbell Tricep Extensions REST – 1 Minute
Stair Steps REST – 1 Minute
Dumbbell RowsREST – 1 Minute
PushupsREST – 1 Minute
Dumbbell Calf RaisesREST – 1 Minute
Dumbbell LungesREST – 1 Minute
Dumbbell Overhead PressREST – 1 Minute
Perform each exercise for 45 seconds or 12-20 reps. Repeat the circuit 1-3 times.
There you have it. A simple circuit training dumbbell workout just for you. That’s one excuse out of the way. If you dont have an incline bench you can make one by securely tying a 2×8 to a coffeetable as I have done here. This exercise is best done with a spotter. If you are working out alone, use lighter weight and higer reps for safety. As withany dumbbell exercise, form is key if you want to maximize your muscle building efforts and minimize the chance of injury. Don’t use too much weight, if you can’t do the exercise slowly then you need to go lighter. Count aloud “one onethousand, two onethousand, three onethousand” on the way up and the way down, if you cant do this on this exercise then you are using too much weight. The reason this exercise method maximizes your muscle growth is because it confines the motion to the muscle you are trying to work out, if your body squirms, swings, and kicks, all you are doing is taking the focus away from the muscle you are trying to exercise. Anyone can be healthier, have more energy, sleep better, and feel better about themselves through bodybuilding.
