4 Things NOT To Do When Experimenting With New Ab Workouts

4 Things NOT To Do When Experimenting With New Ab Workouts

Article by Mark Grey

Ab workouts are a great way to sculpt a six-pack in no time at all. The problem here, however, is that some people go about the whole business without a clue about what they’re doing.

If you are starting out with a set of ab workouts, make sure to keep these tips in mind to prevent yourself from getting injured in the process:

Start without warming upThis is one of the cardinal rules of working out, and is especially important for ab-targeted exercises.

Your abdominal muscles are actually one, big bulk of muscle that supports your entire body as you sit, stand and move about. Get too eager in building up a six-pack, and you may end up bedridden for the better part of a week.

Reach down to your toes, then reach back as far as far as you can for starters. Once you have the basics down, make sure to start your workout sessions slowly – and then build intensity.

Get into awkward anglesOne of the easiest ways to injury during a workout is to overreach the boundaries of your muscles.

Twisting to the side, pushing a bend or forcing any other positions that create discomfort will usually end up with some very nasty injuries. If your muscles feel any sort of pain, then stop doing anything that you are doing and find an alternative workout regimen to work with.

Do take note, however, that there is a difference between pain and burn. Burn is something that shows your muscles are getting shaped while pain is something sharper and indicative of possible injury.

Learn to differentiate between the two before pushing yourself into awkward angles.

Focus on repetitionsHundreds of repetitions do not define good ab workouts – it is the burn that you feel in the muscles.

The burn you feel in your abs is what makes your muscles stronger, and focusing on doing five or ten sets of a particular exercise will not be effective if there is no burn. Learn to make your workout sessions intense, and you will effectively build muscle over time.

Another issue with focusing on repetitions is that you tend to stay contented with ‘finishing’ a set number of repetitions rather than building up the burn. Your abs will require more effort the more developed they are, which is why you need to focus on intensity rather than repetition.

Let your belly get fatAll the muscles in your abs will be for naught if there is a thick enough layer of fat covering them.

This is why it is important to mix bodybuilding workouts with weight-loss regimens. A balanced diet, frequent meals a day and cardiovascular workouts work well with abdominal exercises, so make sure to get rid of that fat if you want your abs to show themselves.

Keep these four no-nos in mind, and your ab workouts will be much more effective than you thought possible!

How To Get 6-Pack Abs Workout From Top To Bottom

How To Get 6-Pack Abs Workout From Top To Bottom

Everyone wants abs and a flat tummy, either big and blocky abs, or a sleek and slender tummy. Regardless of where your starting it is possible, you can get sexy time abs, or you can go all out and lose fat and go for that more extreme ‘ripped’ look. Although you can’t “spot reduce” body fat, when you do achieve fat loss, it comes off of your abs too, usually from the top down – so there are no excuses!

To get the fitness you want quickly, it helps to do the right core exercises. Don’t just do something because it looks good, and just because somebody else can do something doesn’t mean that you should or could…but you have to do something, right? So what workout should you do? Hanging hip lifts is one of the best which focuses on the lower abdominal region without hurting your lower back – the main focus of this abs workout is a highly effective pull-up which gives your legs a quick breather while you work the upper and lower abs. Your abs contract on a continuum of graduated activation,  ”If one wishes to simplify, then it would be crudely accurate to talk of upper, mid and lower abs, but this still tends to mask the fact that there is really a continuum of muscle activation involving all of the trunk muscles, each exhibiting a different level of involvement, depending on the type and pattern of movement. This means that it is highly unlikely that you will be able to totally isolate the ‘lower abs’, since there is always accompanying involvement of many other stabilizing and mobilizing muscles – in this case from lower to upper. You can’t totally isolate a specific region, but you can focus on it, and this exercise is phenomenal for bodybuilding workouts if you want to contract your abs from the bottom up – the key is to make these as slow and deliberate as possible.

To work your abs the most, make sure your fully stretched to the bottom, and don’t focus on your knees coming up, but on your hips rotating coming up as high as possible and try to pause at the top. You’re abdominal muscles don’t attach at your legs, they attach to your hip bones, and if your abs aren’t strong enough to rotate your hips upward in the top position it’s probable not even worth you doing this exercise – at least not yet…if you start swinging, you’re moving too quickly. So, breathe out while you exhale on the way up, and use a bench to get in and out of  the abs straps, if you don’t, just hang on tight.

Targeted Ab Workouts for Sexy Strong Abs

Targeted Ab Workouts for Sexy Strong Abs

Article by Joey Atlas

Your choice of ab workouts can mean the difference between great progress and definite results in your abdominal area or not getting any results at all – and possibly being injured.

There are hundreds of muscles in the torso – the abdominals (all layers), lower and mid back, pelvic region, obliques and the popular ‘love handle’ areas are loaded with muscles of all different sizes, shapes, lengths and angles – which require specific ab exercises to produce the desired effect for optimal fitness.

The following exercises can serve as an abdominal training primer for beginners or they can be added or substituted into your current abs workout routine.

1 – Lying face up, hand down at your side. Bring your legs up, knees slightly bent with the bottom of your feet toward the ceiling. This is your start position. While keeping the abdominals pulled in (contracted), slowly lower your right leg, until the heel touches the ground, and then raise it back up. Do this fifteen times. Then switch legs.

2 – Lying face up with knees bent, feet off the floor. Arms are extended as if reaching toward the sky if you were standing. As you breathe out, slowly bring your knees toward you by contracting your abdominals (pulling inward). Then breathe in as you return to the start position.

3 – Lying face up with knees bent, heels on the ground and toes pointing up. Lift your butt off the ground, and pull your stomach in (contract the abs) to engage the core muscles. Now, here is where the fun starts. Lift one foot off the floor, extending that leg until it is straight, bring it back to the start position (heel on ground) and then do the same with the other leg. Keep alternating until you do a total of twenty reps, ten on each side.

If this exercise sequence is too easy, go through it again and see how you do. If it was too challenging, decrease the number of repetitions to about five and do this every other day. Gradually increase the repetitions as your core gets stronger.

A big mistake many people, even trainers, make is to mimic the abdominal routines of bodybuilders or power-lifters.

The problem with that is most people are not bodybuilders or power-lifters – and these people tend to over-train anyway (I know this because I used to do it myself!). The problems here range from a lot of wasted time to serious, long term injuries.

This happens every day to people who try to exercise without proper guidance and it’s one the reasons why physical therapists are so busy!

Proper ab workouts must be designed to provide the most effective exercise training stimulus to the entire midsection, in the shortest amount of time, with minimal risk of injury. The problem is it is extremely rare to find an abdominal and core exercise program that meets all of these criteria.

Structure your own workouts according to the principles outlined above, with the proper selection of ab exercises for effective and safe results.
