In January 2009, Renae Sather, a 39-year old mortgage process developer and mother of two, made a resolution to start living her best life. Now 45 pounds lighter and almost halfway to her goal weight, Renae shares her struggles, her accomplishments and how she is living her best life one day at time.

What is your history with food and weight?Growing up, my family often celebrated with food, so I learned to associate eating with happy times, parties, and reward. And the foods we usually made for these get-togethers weren’t exactly diet-friendly: Seafood in lemon butter sauce, lasagna with meat and cheese, pasta with Alfredo sauce, green chili with pork, hot and sour soup, baked potatoes with all the toppings, to name just a few.

On top of that, my mom, who was single and often worked two or three jobs at a time to support us, often brought home food from the restaurants where she worked as a waitress or cook. She could work miracles with left over food, but often, they were things like mashed potatoes and gravy, Monte Cristo sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, or high-fat meats in all sorts of heavy sauces.

I started putting on extra weight when I was in elementary school but it wasn’t until I went to college and was out on my own that I really started gaining weight. By that point, I could be classified as obese by health standards. I was going to college full-time, working two jobs, and had gotten married young, at age 21
